The borderlands of Arizona are littered with old vehicles. Most are left behind after moving people north from the border. The border crossers abandon the vehicles when they get stuck or break down -- a common occurrence. Equally common is leaving the vehicle to rot after a Border Patrol officer stops it and takes the crossers into custody. This seems to have been the fate of this car and its passengers, as the surrounding ground is littered with sun-faded backpacks, pants, shirts, socks and toothbrushes often found in “lay-up” sites. During the early- to the mid-1990s, as the government cracked down on border crossings in urban areas like El Paso and San Diego, the crossers began to move into the rough desert in between. Many of the now-rotting vehicles I have come across found their current resting place during this time...stripped of useful parts, shot and beaten by vandals, sitting silent, their stories untold.
